Need a Refresher on What We have Discussed:
Remember, if your legal doesn’t work with your overall business, it isn’t protecting your business for growth, it is hindering your business from growth.
In your opening paragraph, much like with other types of copywriting, you want to convey something. You want the reader to keep going and read through the rest of the document. Unlike copywriting, that is not always done with compelling copy. Though, as you will see in a minute, some things may be compelling enough to make the reader continue.
What it Means
- It includes subsidiaries and affiliates. At this time, The Outsourced Associate has neither, but this language allows me to make a move and adjust the legal later. In the case of my practice, Legal to English may become a subsidiary or an affiliate of The Outsourced Associate some day down the road. This language, though not applicable now, becomes applicable if a change is made, but before I have time to update legal. This is an example of using your legal to protect you for growth.
- Statement of Ownership. It is common for your business to have a legal name that is different than the URL of your website or the trade name you use on your website. In the case of this site, the firm name and the URL match. This will be more important when we deal with the Legal to English policy in a second. It is, however, necessary to use the legal name of your entity at some point in your policy.
- How You Will Notify Users of Policy Changes. It is common to provide an update via email. You can only do that, however, with those who have given you their email addresses. So, you must use some other way. In my case, I have chosen to include a notice on the home page. It will be prominently displayed on the home page. I have an image slider on my home page, so I will add an updated image and leave it on the site for a reasonable amount of time to give people notice of the changes being made to the policy.
That is a lot to cover in one paragraph. But, it is covered concisely. It is important to understand why each piece of the policy is included. If it doesn’t have a purpose, it shouldn’t be in your policy. As we have mentioned before, this Policy is designed to look more like a standard (legal) document. There is no room for play. This policy in some ways advertises my skill as a contract drafter, establishes a level of professionalism as a lawyer, and speaks to my understanding of the law. I chose this, more formal, approach to accomplish this.
Legal to English Example
If you do not like what I tell you in this policy, your only option is to let me know what your issues are with the policy and quit using the site until it is changed or you change your mind. If you let me know, and I make any changes, I will let you know when the changes are made. I may change this policy at any time. I may do it a lot (I am a lawyer). I may do it a little (I am a lawyer). If I do, I will let you know by sending an email (if you have joined the conversation), or making it known on the home page, and by any other way I feel is necessary to be sure everyone knows I changed it. If you, somehow, miss any of those notices, you need to make sure to check back and see if this policy has changed and make sure you still agree. If you don’t, let me know and quit using the site until I change it or you change your mind.
This policy is obviously different. Legal to English is a community. It is a group of entrepreneurs working together to build something amazing. So, it is a bit softer on the agree or leave statements. If I gave that option with the Outsourced Associate site, I would run into issues with other lawyers who were trying to get my information or clients or any number of other people that may try to contact me about the issues. I chose to do that with Legal to English because I want to know what issues you have. I want to know if the problem you have is something I said or something I didn’t say well enough. I want it to be a conversation. Are we disagreeing on how I am collecting information? Or, have I not explained myself clearly enough? That is why I give options to discuss this policy and work it out.
Notice, though, that I am under no obligation to change it. Also notice that I linked back to The Outsourced Associate Policy because of the way it does control all sites linked to it. This incorporates that policy into this and gives a way of letting you know about the company that owns the site.
